Text-to-Speech
Use Text-to-Speech (TTS) when building items, with the Speak icon to hear how an item reads aloud and Alt Text so images read for students who receive the TTS support.
Helpful Tips
- Text to Speech (TTS) is a testing support that can be enabled for individual students taking online assessments.
- When enabled, students can select an icon to have all or part of a question read aloud.
Testing Text to Speech
- When creating or editing an item, use the Start Speech icon to test how the content will be read aloud.
- TTS can be tested separately for the question stem and answer choices.
- Be sure to Save the item after making changes.
Student Controls
During online testing, students with TTS enabled can:
- Play, pause, or stop the speech.
- Select a different voice.
- Adjust the reading speed.

This allows students to click an icon to read all or part of a question.
When creating or modifying items, use the “start speech” icon to test how they will be read aloud.
Do this for the individual question stem or answer choices.
After clicking save from the item view, the text-to-speech icon mimics what it will look like when a student tests online, giving them the ability to play, pause, or stop the speech, select a different voice, or adjust the speed at which the information is read aloud.
